I remember as a young teen when I thought I knew everything about love, I kept a MEAD salt n pepper notebook. You know the "ole school" books you kept everything in. I wrote the words of my favorite love songs in those books. Started to find my voice in poetry. Even dabbled in song writing and art; the ones that always ended with a heart being drawn in a few ways. Those were my outlets and then they became my life journals. I didn't realize the passion back then but I knew I was always a sucker for a love story and that's what ole school R&B of the 90s did for me.
After hearing a song I would always pick up that notebook lay on my bed and write whatever I wanted to. I remember being as young as 11 and listening to love songs that made you cling to every word. REWIND was my friend and back then when you had cassette tapes, I would rewind the tapes so much that I always ended up getting them tangled to the point of having to get a new one. lol But these songs were so inspiring, they made me dream, made me fall in love with the idea of LOVE. I became a helpless romantic at a very young age. To me love was about self-sacrifice, the element of surprise, affection. Love was a look, a communication of I'm sorry, I need you, an understanding between lovers. Love was a continuous song that told a story and that's why I loved the way music was music back then. It didn't have to be wrapped in a box, or come in the form of a flower. Love to me was always best in its simplest form. A simple love note, a letter, and a song where the words communicate the feeling... Those made the best memories.
I've often been told that I'm easy to please when it comes to presents especially around Valentine's Day. Give me a teddy bear I smile and express my sincere appreciation. Give me a flower and I would do the same. Write me a love letter and I would lock myself up in my room, put on my favorite love song, dim the lights and sometimes even light a candle and just read. Silly right? But not many understood how much I valued love in the simplest form because to me real love requires REAL work, hard work, hard sacrifice, continuous expressions and reinventing yourself. You can say I love you but nothing says I love you more than taking the time and caring enough to put more effort in what you communicate your feelings of love to be. I'm not a fan of commercializing love where it becomes a sensationalized object of ONE DAY. You may disagree with me but I've always felt the need to protect things and people I love. Call me private but in a sense I rather be called selfish in this instance because to me the best part about love is the moments when no one is watching. Just a thought...
Love Note:
"There are 12 months a year...30 days a month...7 days a week...24 hours a day...60 minutes an hour...but only one like you in a lifetime. "
